To keep from giving away your last copy, simply take a clean, bright yellow highlighter and mark the original. Mrs. D writes the word "copy" over hers so it's impossible to miss; when I use this in my own classroom, I draw a star in the corner or highlight the line for students' names. Since implementing this trick, Mrs. D. has found that her filing systems have improved, and she has stopped losing or giving away her originals.
