On Wednesdays, we here at The Snarky Schoolteacher bring you #EdHack, a feature designed to bring you tips and tricks for your classroom to make your life just a little easier!
Happy Wednesday! As we begin the new school year, many teachers are looking for creative ways to give their students a designated spot to work, whether for circle time, independent work, individual reading, or more. However, purchasing bean bags, chairs, or carpet squares can be pricey, and with the financial strain that prepping our classrooms for the new school year often puts such large purchases on hold.
For today's #EdHack, we found a savvy saver new teacher who discovered a great way to get some carpet squares for her classroom free of charge! Ms. Mullins, a first-year third grade teacher from Georgia, discovered Shaw Contract Group this summer. She writes:
"As a first year teacher, I had a lot of items that I wanted to buy for my classroom, but starting from scratch is expensive! I discovered the Shaw Contract Group this summer and learned that they will provide carpet samples free of charge! Go to their website, select "carpet," and select the types you want. Click "add sample" at the bottom of the picture; you can order up to twenty samples and four of each selected color. The ones I ordered came in six long pieces, and I used a utility knife to cut them into 12 squares!
Ms. Mullins was thrilled to find such a great resource for her classroom and has been sharing with all her fellow teachers. She does note that some individuals she knows have not been able to receive the samples by mail; instead, Shaw has asked them to come to their warehouse to pick out samples. Either way, it's a win-win situation!
Additionally, it's important to note that you may not receive your exact order. For example, she ordered five colors and twenty pieces and received two colors in six pieces. However, Ms. Mullins notes that "it's free, so it's a blessing no matter what!"
Thank you so much for sharing this great #EdHack, Ms. Mullins! Do you plan on ordering these for your classroom? We'd love to see them. Tag us on social media using the hashtag #edhack, or show/link us in the comments below.
